There has been a lot of this in the sky lately.
I have to say that most of the time they are not headed South.
Not directly anyhow.
Do you know why one side is always longer than the other?

"There are more birds on that side !"

Around here , we call that a "JOEISM"
My brother in law is always coming up with stuff like that.

"Pretty bad Joey"

My answer is  that  "Geese can't count."
I "googled" it and didn't get much of an answer.
Interesting though...
There is less draft the further back you are in line (makes sense)..
and they
all flap their wings in unison.

Hello, I think some geese are residents and stay year round and other will migrate. Joey is cute. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

That so sounds like one of the kids jokes here. Why is there always one bird in the front of the V formation? Because everyone else is following

Have a great weekend, Missy. xo Diana

Your "Joe-ism" makes me think of that old classic joke:

"How many dead people are there in that cemetery?"

"All of them!"

I used to love watching geese in the winter - not a thing we get here. Interesting question about the length of the sides of the vee.

Sorry about slow reply - I have been in New Zealand and blogging has taken a bit of a back seat.
